The revolutionary E-FOUR system provides the RX 450h with intelligent four-wheel drive capability. Highly responsive, E-FOUR can instantly allocate torque from the rear electric motor to drive the rear wheels – but only when this is required by driving style or road conditions. Tyre wear, fuel economy and emissions are all reduced by this intelligent, light-weight system.
Active Torque Control AWD is also highly intelligent. When accelerating on a slippery surface, engine power is quickly directed to all four wheels for optimum grip. And when cornering, torque is actively and variably distributed to ensure maximum traction. At higher straight-line speeds in good conditions, power is no longer allocated to the rear wheels, thereby improving fuel efficiency.
Intelligent full hybrid technology delivers outstanding power with improved fuel economy, significantly lower emissions and exceptionally quiet running. Lexus Hybrid Drive seamlessly combines two powerful electric motors with a V6 petrol engine to produce 299 DIN hp (220 kW) with just 148 g/km of C02 emissions.
Unique to Lexus in the premium market segment, full hybrid technology enables the RX 450h to run in Electric Vehicle (EV) mode – realising zero emissions performance. EV mode is used whenever possible in slow moving urban traffic – no fuel is burnt, progress is near silent and free of all CO2, NOx and particulate emissions.
As speed increases, the V6 petrol engine seamlessly takes over. At cruising speeds and when braking, surplus energy is recovered and converted into electric power to re-charge the battery. Accelerate firmly and the electric motors instantly supplement the V6 engine with a dramatic surge of power.
The new full hybrid RX 450h: Breathtaking performance, with improved fuel economy and significantly lower emissions.
Futuristic ergonomics ensure the ‘dual-zone cockpit’ in the new RX significantly reduces the information overload so often experienced by drivers today.
The “display zone” features an 8” colour LCD multi-display screen set back in the dashboard for improved visibility and a multi-information display, featuring crisp white Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology. The driver uses the ‘operation zone’ to seamlessly interact with the new RX. Intuitive access to, and control of, extensive vehicle information is provided via the multi-information toggle switch on the steering wheel and the Remote Touch system.
Remote Touch revolutionises the driver-vehicle interface. Easy to use, and conveniently positioned, Remote Touch is as natural to the driver’s hand as a computer mouse. Ergonomically optimised to reduce eye movement and unnecessary cockpit distraction, Remote Touch enables drivers and front seat passengers to control many advanced features including entertainment, climate and navigation systems.
Just like a computer mouse, operating Remote Touch moves the pointer around the multi-display screen. When the pointer comes close to an icon, it is gently pulled towards it using a sensory reaction force. Simply click ENTER to action the command.
The new generation RX provides a relaxed and comfortable driving environment designed to enhance driver concentration. The most advanced ergonomics ensure the driver is not unnecessarily distracted from the road ahead.
Head-Up Display (HUD) technology projects key vehicle data, e.g. current speed, directly onto the windscreen within the driver’s field of vision. The display can be tailored to the individual driver’s preferences, with both display panel position and luminosity being easily adjusted.
Extensive testing was carried out with prototype vehicles on the snow-covered roads of Hokkaido in northern Japan to ensure clear visibility and maximum clarity. The bright white illumination complements the vehicle’s instrumentation and the Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology of the multi-information display.
In addition to vehicle speed, simplified navigation arrow commands or audio settings are projected onto the same head-up display panel. And for vehicles fitted with the Pre-Crash Safety System (PCS), the BRAKE! alert will appear in red if appropriate.
The design of the new RX reflects a highly refined sense of hospitality – one which strives to create a warm and lasting impression on driver and passengers alike.
Everything about the RX cabin communicates an unambiguous message of sophisticated luxury and quality. Front seats are electrically adjustable, heated and provide lumbar support. Sumptuous leather is standard, while there is the option to upgrade to the finest perforated and ventilated semi-aniline leather upholstery. Futuristic styling and attention to detail are ever-present: Wood trim is hand-finished and windows open and close with the slow-fast-slow motion of a traditional Japanese sliding door.
The perfect environment in which to enjoy music, videos, or other digital media, the new RX can be ordered with a 9, 12 or 15-speaker audio system.
Top of the range is the 15-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround system, which offers exceptional fidelity and clarity. With it, passengers enjoy a perfect 7.1-channel surround sound, home theatre experience for their favourite CDs and DVDs. This state-of-the-art system also features Hard Disc Drive (HDD) technology which can function as a sound library. This lets you save CDs onto the car’s hard disc drive and catalogue them using advanced Gracenote software.
All new RX models have an auxiliary input and USB port which enables the use of iPods or other media players. And true to its forward-thinking concept all RX audio systems are also Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) ready.
The interior of the new RX is highly luxurious, very spacious and also exceptionally versatile. Take the seating combinations, for example. The rear seats can split 40/20/40 – and there’s a ‘One-Touch Tumble’ mechanism that lets you quickly fold them all down at once. For added flexibility, the rear seats can also be moved backwards and forwards, whilst the backrest can be reclined for enhanced comfort on longer journeys.
The RX’s luggage compartment is roomy and increases greatly when the rear seats are folded down. The wide and unobstructed cargo area maximises usable space for stowing large objects, such as suitcases or up to four sets of golf clubs. For extra convenience, a vehicle height adjustment switch lowers the rear of the vehicle for easier loading/unloading (models with air suspension). An optional electrically operated tailgate further enhances comfort.
Inside, the new RX also offers a great deal of useful storage space. Owners and their guests will enjoy discovering the front centre console with its generous modular storage capability, large glove box, rear armrest compartment and numerous other storage containers.
