The new Grand Vitara is longer, wider, lower than its predecessor, and has an exterior design that creates a sleeker, more dynamic look. 4×4 is all about traction and the Grand Vitara has vast amounts of it. In 4H mode it runs like a normal car, but with added traction. But it’s only the start of all the thrills to come. Need to plough through deep mud or snow? Then select 4H Lock for truly outstanding traction. And if you really want to go for it over the roughest terrain imaginable, select 4L, with a gear ratio twice that of 4H it provides unbelievable low-end traction.

How much power you want to bring into play is up to you. With a choice of a 2 litre 16V petrol and 1.9 DDiS diesel, there’s plenty of it. The 140PS 2 litre unit delivers a strong response and levels of refinement for both off-road adventuring and motorway driving, whilst the 1.9 diesel utilises an intercooler and turbocharger to deliver great torque across the rev range.

Tough and rugged, the build of the new Grand Vitara provides positive protection in itself. The elevated driving position provides greater all round vision and a 200mm ground clearance gives you the confidence to take on the toughest terrain. But where the Grand Vitara really impresses is the sheer number of safety measures as standard.

To begin with there’s a reinforced cabin to give you protection from all angles. Then there’s ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) which stops your brakes from locking up when the brake is used in an emergency and EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) which works with ABS to ensure the correct amount of braking power is distributed to each wheel. There are also no fewer than six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and 3-point seatbelts with height-adjustable headrests on rear passenger seats.

This has all resulted in Euro NCAP awarding the Grand Vitara four stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for both child and pedestrian protection. So you can concentrate on the adventure safe in the knowledge that we’re taking care of everything else.
